STILL ALIVE WITH LUCAS

An emotional, staccato account of what happened to a German couple, a 29-year old girl and her 45 year old husband, in their flight from Germany as protest against the party. They started a seaside cafe at To in Spain- then the Revolution broke and they were tossed into the madhouse of suspicion as Gestapo spies, with Lucas' architectural equipment pointing up his arrest. Finally, Lucas gets out of Barcelona and back to a deserted hotel is turned over to children evacuees and Polly has her hands full, while Lucas joins the fighting. Eventually they escape over the line into France and thence to England, where Polly is a chambermaid in an English inn and Lucas is woodcutter and hedger. Has some of the quality of the Johnstone's experiences recounted in Hotel in Spain and Flight from Spain. A story of hardships, war, civilians, under stress and strain, recounted with a certain matter-of-factness about events, personal tension, intimate detail of daily life, spiced with humor and confidence.
