The period is that of Louis XIV; the setting, Hanover; the characters, the people of the court of the Duke Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover, with his mistress, evil genius of the court, his wife, a scholar and high handed controller of destinies, his son, who became George I of England, and his French-German bride, Sophia-Dorothy, who was broken on the wheel of their conflicting passions. Historical fiction, which presents a new facet of the period, but which is too intricately involved with interplay of politics to catch wide public interest, except in readers who know their history.
