NO TEARS FOR CHRISTMAS

A Christmas, overcast by the dark desolation of the Civil War, finds the Hunters on the losing side, their father gone, Beau- the eldest- killed, and Davie wounded, and it is Teresa who keeps the youngsters together while their mother gives in to the comfort of tears. The Yankees come, and demand a billet- eat the cake which Teresa has baked for the children. But when a wounded Lieutenant is brought in, it is Teresa who proves that hatred has no place in the face of death, and Christmas is celebrated together in the solidarity of suffering.... For the handerkerchief (half) hour, and sentiment provides the small, seasonal gift.
