KIRKUS REVIEW

The itchy thing about this First guide is its appearance only one season after Joanna Cole's superbly disciplined Fleas (KR, 1973). For though Hoke and Pitt describe flea life cycles, mating and feeding in greater detail and though they have collected more amusing/creepy flea trivia (including photos of a flea circus performance), their text enlarges on Cole's without adding much of importance. The material is diverse and always interesting, the style sometimes awkward, but -- on balance -- this seems like just a larger flea riding on the smaller Fleas' back.
