Joe Haylow, ""Grow with Haylow,"" an acquisitive man in every way who has built up a large department store chain, is about to step aside but who will succeed him? Does Macy's tell Gimbels? Will it be his son Roger, later revealed to be involved with a homosexual? All of this takes place among his executive entourage: Bridget, the ""First Lady of Retailing,"" who has always worked alongside Joe; Brad Deland, married to the vicious Doe-Doe (even if she does say ""flirty-witty"") and having an affair with the wife of Joe's other son; and so it goes until the man who could once order an abortion for a pregnant secretary by divine fiat can no longer cope. This then is one of those merchandising items about the retailing business in the kind of emporium less suited to books than to hot pants or jockey shorts.
