KIRKUS REVIEW

A biography of Maria Mitchell, famous astronomer and teacher, leader in the battle for women's rights, and here given stature in a rounded biography. Her character emerges, brilliant, forthright, challenging, pungent, stimulating. Her life began on Nantucket Island; her Quaker heritage was a vital part of her life, though she was read out of Meeting as a rebel. The background of Nantucket life- the years at Vassar, in the first great experiment in higher education for women- world recognition, all this receives full attention, while the emotional and intellectual values are suggested rather than explored.
