FATHER DE SMET

By

Publisher: Farrar & Rinehart

The life of the Flemish Jesuit missionary who spent his lifetime in the N.W. Rockies, administering to the Indians (mid 19th century). His was a life of great self denial and faith and tireless devotion to the people whom he saw as exploited and despoiled by the whites. He lived through the cholera plague of St. Louis; he suffered in his last years from Brights disease, but at 70 he went alone to Sitting Bull's camp in the midst of the Sioux War and effected the signing of peace. A fine piece of recreation, vigorous and holding. Should have pioneer plus religious sale.
