Add the auspices--Child Study Association--and the subtitle--""A Parent's Guide to the Sexual Development, Education, Attitudes, and Behavior of the Child, From Infancy Through Adolescence""--and you have a good idea of the broad psycho-sexual-social concept of human development on which this is based. More than the answer to inevitable questions (Mrs. Arnstein covered these in What To Tell Your Child), this explores, with the aid of numerous quotes, the normal developmental process as it is presently understood and suggests appropriate parental responses thereto: everything from toilet training through the early Oedipal stage to masturbation and repression is treated, not excluding such embarrassments as parental nudity and size of genitals. It's not so much what is said but how--demonstrated here by the relaxed: humane tone. Some parents may not want to know so much; some will be surprised to discover that there is so much to know.
