THE FREEDOM OF THE CHRISTIAN MAN

This collection of lectures, addresses, articles and study papers have a sort of common theme, the cost of freedom and the necessity to struggle for it. The titles of the chapters give a clue to the area of Dr. Thielicke's concern: ""Ideals in a Free Society"", (in which he writes of atheism and ideology in the Marxist-Leninist World),"" Man's Freedom and God's Role"", ""The Freedom of Preaching in the Age of the Masses"", etc. There is wide difference and style between the various sections, considerable repetition, and not a little obscurity to the American reader. One rather feels that this collection of writings and addresses is made available to take advantage of a considerable enthusiasm aroused by the author's previously translated and published sermons, especially ""The Waiting Father"". Except for the specialized student of the problems of freedom in the modern world however, this volume must prove to be more than a little disappointing.
