THE CARNELLIAN CIRCLE

One of those only too managed CIA-KGB stories in which a law firm that works for the still respectable former is hired to find out why a Russian assassination team, ICE for short, is picking off all our top people, most latterly a Supreme Court justice. Lawyer John Hammond travels from Florida to Russia where he's investigated as an Americanski spy on to Turkey and back and finally figures out (the title referral and the only original part of the book) how the signal is transmitted live for the next kill. Depersonalized with all those acronyms and ciphers and devices which seem to make it more actively lifeless.
