A novel of the development, life and dangers to a French farm, as Pascal Derivat and his tenants bring his land to successful production, and as family antagonisms have their share in the story. Pascal, hated by his cousin Clodius, sometimes loved by another cousin Genevievo, has a feeling for the soil that tempers his violence, balances his judgments and controls his life. The murder of Clodius, the hiding of the criminal, the intervention of Genevieve, these are part of the pattern of a man's destiny with his land. The excitement of the succession of the seasons, of the mystic communion of man and earth, the beauties of exacting farm work are expressively described and the novel, with its drama, has a certain quiet effect.
