YOUNG MAN OF PARIS by Henri Calet

YOUNG MAN OF PARIS

A native's nostalgic recall of a lifetime in this city, this is one long street scene (fairly close to the sewer) of only questionable quarters and characters, uninhibited in its intimacy. Conditioned by a father who had a ""topnotch career in venery"", counterfeiting, gambling, and many other unorthodox, unpredictable enterprises, Calet was exposed to continuous economic reversals as well as the frequent rifts between his parents. This follows the progress of a young rake who took readily to women, enjoyed many irregular relationships, hankered for but never achieved the luxuries of life, and held an undampened appreciation for life in this city, its shops, streets, cafes, subways, etc. Highly seasoned, this is not for the conventional tourist traffic.
