ISLAND PRIEST

This is the story of a storm-swept, isolated fishermen's island off the coast of France and of the native who acted as the island priest without benefit of ordination because no regular priest wanted to go to such a God-forsaken spot. The crude, violent life of the islanders, shot through with genuine piety; the simple devotion of an unlearned man who felt that the offices of the church must be preserved, priest or no priest, are dramatically and vividly told. The final vindication of Thomas Gourvennec through ordination by the Bishop, despite failures in prescribed studies, brings the story to a just and happy ending.
