Homely, homey first person approach for the incidents in a thoroughly American family during the first year of the war, with Ed and Elizabeth, appreciated and appreciative parents, as backlog for their three children, and Charles, their English evacuee, Dick, the eldest, is one of the early selectees, and there is his hurried marriage to Eileen when his overseas orders come through. Barbara, the middle one, has her share of adolescent romantic interests and upheavals; Freddle, 9, and Charles, the English boy, are simpler. And the book closes as Eileen has a baby, with Dick out of the country. Warmhearted, woman stuff, family style.
