Although the publisher is presenting this as a new book and much of the text has been revised, rewritten or supplemented, much of the information updated, librarians will have to evaluated it as a replacement of the 1959 edition; also, although the order of chapters is changed, many of the topics -- i.e. industries --are the same and some of the chapters are virtually identical. Overall, the exposition is less discursive, therefore more succinct; also more mature (and set in smaller type). Most of the specific changes reflect advancing technology: in the section on refining molten iron, the oxygen furnace replaces the open hearth; in the chapter on Boeing, the SST replaces the 707; offshore wells are added to the discussion of oil. On the other hand, milk, paper and oranges remain much or just the same. Not a new book, then, but improved and of course current.
