A consistent, convincing piece of work, in a robust novel of the '90's, and of two who knew what they wanted or thought they did. Lottie and Joe have their eyes on their goals:- she to become an opera singer, he to make money and gain power. Both arrive -- their paths recross through the years -- they have married, but not happily -- but at the end, they realize that they have sacrificed happiness for ambition -- and that their choice had not brought them what they wanted. A good picture of a period, which has more to recommend it than the outline of the story would indicate.
