TIGERTAIL, THE GAME CHICKEN by Henry Chapin

TIGERTAIL, THE GAME CHICKEN

A Bermuda game chicken by breed and actually a rooster, Tigertail's career as a semi-domesticated yard pet is an episodic story that underlines this peculiar sort of poultry's characteristics. He made a reliable alarm clock for Joe who lived for awhile in the Everglades; he proved to be a reliable substitute watchdog by routing a rattler and sounding his tocsin over a bobcat. His peculiar ways with the family snacks and his nosy-parker approach to a visitor's wig provide a comfortable sort of humor more productive of smiles than laughter. When the family returns to New York, Tigertail is left with a Seminole girl and a harem of chickens to strut before and protect, with the promise of Joe's return. Nothing to crow over but yet nothing to cluck at.
