KIRKUS REVIEW

Capsule biographies (with appended chronology of events) that underline the contributions and messages, ideas and importance, of an array of assembled Americans, native or foreign born. At variance, but representative of American traits, this stresses the chief characteristics of such strange book-mates as Gershwin, Whistler, Carnegie, Debs, Revero, Rookne, Will Rogers, Webster, Susan B. Anthony, Astor, Boone, Paine, Jefferson, Al Smith, and other equally diverse personalities. The idea is to draw a composite portrait of the changing face of America in its thinking, living and deeds. Highspotting, necessarily superficial, interesting chiefly because of its inclusions.
