The humble story of the Browns of Washington Heights follows David's graduation from high school and his futile efforts to rebel against his mother's determination that he is to be a lawyer — and a pride to his Jewish family. It shows his exhausting program of work in the day and law school at night, his constantly frustrated love for loyal Marion, his many rebuffs in trying to get a job in the depression after he has been admitted to the Bar, his refusal to compromise and handle shady racket cases offered by an old friend. The collapse of his principles — to get money for Mama's cancer operation — are the cause of his being disbarred, and, with Mama's death, he has paid his debt in full and is at last free for Marion and the work he really wants to do.
