Friendship and love complicate the issues of existence among four misfits, as Hal, George, Chunk and Rub live -- by chance and by choice -- in a shanty. Then comes homeless orphan Angels, who promptly reorders their lives. Friendship between Rob and Hal is shaken but survives; Rob has a turbulent love affair with a neurotic sadistic girl, who brings him luck in his art, and who leaves in the pitch of furious quarrel; Hal is killed by a venomous labor agitator; but in the final analysis, Rob and Angels find happiness possible together. Life on the thin edge, handled with an essentially masculine touch, though uneven in values.
