From every available source the author has gleaned material on the history of Cape Cod skippers from Pre-Revolutionary days down to the passing of the ""wind ships"". He has borrowed in boxes of letters, in old logs, in account books, in personal journals; he has secured first hand information from the survivors and the families. And he has amassed a huge store of incident and anecdote. The result is at times more or less of a catalog, but mixed with the dry recital are plenty of thrilling stories -- of gales, shipwrecks, disasters, pirates, cholera, blockade running, rescue, mutiny and sudden death. There is heroism, pathos, humor and tragedy. One learns much of the ships and of these that sailed them, and the book should fascinate lovers of the sea, and prove a valuable reference book for students of Americans. Admirably written.
