This is a discussion of Venezuelan history and politics, rather than a travel book. The author is more interested in these phases of the country than in its beauty. So it is not a book for those who want local color and atmosphere. At times one is overwhelmed with the accumulation of facts thrown at one, but as a whole the book leaves a coherent impression of the country and its program. The economic, cultural and industrial conditions are discussed, against the outline background of his travels. One gets the impression of an ambitious plan for a well-established democracy, with universal education and better sanitation. The outlook is generally optimistic.
