A VINDICATION OF LIBERAL THEOLOGY

Liberal theology for over a generation, has been under a cloud, and Neo-orthodoxy, with its appeal to ""Biblical religion"", has held the center of the stage. But Dr. Henry P. Ven Dusen, retiring head of the Union Theological Seminary, believes that liberal theology is neither dead nor outmoded. There not only is a distinguishable body of belief which may properly be designated ""liberal theology"", something genuinely now in the pilgrimage of Christian faith down through the ages, but this same liberal theology is the least inadequate, most worthy and defensible interpretation of the Christian Faith in the 19 centuries of its history. Its central intellectual motive is to make Christian faith intelligible and credible, comprehensible and convincing to intelligent informed and honest minds of each successive era. It gladly proclaims and affirms Jesus Christ as both the source and norm of Christian Faith. The Jesus of History and the Living Christ are one indissoluble personal reality. Such a book as this will be doubly welcome to those whose faith first ""came alive"" with the proclamation of Evangelical Liberalism, and who have not been willing to concede that their faith was, or should be, dead.
