From the Middle Ages to Mozart, this is the first large scale musical history by a Frenchman, and is a partial outgrowth of the medieval revival in France and an attempt to bring music out of the domination of the latter 19th century (Beethoven-Brahms, etc.). Highly specialized, though an exhaustive and impressive piece of work which traces the development, structure, science of musical forms from the Gregorian chants to the chansons and Lieders, to the Renaissance in France and Italy. Then on to oratorios and cantatas, opera and opera comique, ballet, vocal music, sacred music..
