KIRKUS REVIEW

The age-old dream of men to take wing had provoked innumerable catastrophes until a morning in December 1903 when those two incorrigible Wright brothers shocked the world into simultaneous excitement and skepticism. What distinguished the two mid-westerners from their less fortunate predecessors was not necessarily the daring of their dream or their persistence. It was rather a happy alloy of patience, curiosity, awareness, and luck, welded together by the obsession that if birds could fly, so then could men. Written vividly, this biography maintains a comfortable balance between technical and personal emphasis.
