AN ARTIST SEES ALASKA

Along with three other artists, -- Cummings, Laning, Jones, --Poor made a tour of duty in an unknown land, under the auspices of the War Art Unit. He found he liked Alaska and the longer he stayed the more he wanted to return. His journeyings took him from Seattle via the Inner Passage to Seward, Ft. Richardson, Anchorage, and then by jeep, plane and boat sketching, observing, to Ladd_Field, Fairbanks, Nome, St. Lawrence Island, and the Eskimo and Alaska Territorial Guard. Then travelling on to points as far away as Pt. Barrow, in company with a major who was recruiting and raining the ATG. The dissolution of the Art Unit brought his work to a close, but Poor kept going so that red tape wouldn't unwind fast enough to catch him, until he was ordered home to report... He gives his personal, factual, visual record of the trip, of the magnificent settings, the proportion between possibilities and accomplishment, the work to be done for the Eskimo and Americans living there, the feel of the land as war affects it. In very personal style, he amplifies much that has been said by others.
