A dog's-eye-view of his young master's problem leads to a satisfactory canine solution. Young Gus enlists the olefactory assistance of his ""all-breed"" pooch Desmond in tracking down the strange disappearance of neighbor, Mr. Titus. Imaginations of boy and dog run rampant as they follow clues which all prove ineffectual At the County Fair Dog Show, Desmond unexpectedly locates the scent of Mr. Titus and accidentally imprisoned in a truck, finally encounters him in fine condition on a nearby farm. Through intelligent maneuvering he leads Gus there and the town is relieved to discover that Mr. Titus ""disappeared"" by his own choice. Desmond is prouder of the Private Eye Badge awarded him than he would have been of any blue ribbon. The author superimposes some amusing views of humanity on his dog-hero in a somewhat trite plot.
