Wellsian future tippling, in this story of the depopulation and devastation of Europe by a series of smashing wars -- the time 1950. All communication cut off, the few remaining humans reduced to living like beasts, Ann and her tubercular brother are safe on an island for the time being. The brother sets off in a boat to find a mate for Ann, meets up with an Englishman, Fitzharding, who is forced to kill the brother, and Ann and Fitzharding sail on to find a permanent stopping place, where they may have safety and security for the future. A well told adventure novel, with plausible pursuit of facts-as-they-might-be.
