They're orphans, except for their foster father Pete and he's not immune, either. When he learns he's dying of cancer, he marries Anna but then gives her back to Steve. They return to the ski slopes which have always been their playground (both Vermont and Switzerland) and Anna grows up just enough to keep a penitential promise. . . .
