Union Theological Seminary awarded Murray Lee Newman, Jr., a doctorate for the studies that led to this work, but five years of teaching at the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary of Virginia and a fellowship at Heidelberg have further enabled the author to develop a thesis that may well become a classic in the field of Old Testament Studies. Point by point Dr. Newman shows the contrast in the J and E traditions, and, by analysis of the historical situation, demonstrates how the ""J"" outlook -- cultic and hierarchic- wrestled with the ""E"" conception -- ethical and democratic -- before the two strands were blended briefly and in uneasy tension in the Davidic kingdom, only to burst asunder again under his grandson, Rehoboam. While this book has obvious appeal to Old Testament scholars, it has been so written that any man with seminary training, or even a solid course in the Bible at the college level, can read it with profit.
