THE COTTON MILL WORKER

Not a report -- simply a defining of the scope of this latest addition to ""Labor in 20th Century America"" (of which there have been three, -- Noodle Trades, Printing, Man and Coal). This tells of the immigrant labor that poured into New England's mills, of Southern planters who became part of the machine, of sweatshop workers, of hours, earnings, unemployment. The focus is on New England and four of the southeastern seaboard states and Alabama -- ten states responsible for 90 of the industry, of the United Textile Workers (A F of L) and the Textile Workers Union (CIO). This is an important series in the history of the American labor problem.
