Narrator Rex is kind of the male equivalent of Helen Trent, currently pursuing a play-wright's muse in Austria. He is distracted by Nixe, and this story is about their idyll, not exactly made in himmel. After Nixe ""proudly presented her plumped packet of delicacies"" to him, they became lovers exchanging ""appley kisses"" among other things amid lovers' petulant quarrels. One particular thing Rex finds objectionable is Nixe's detailed recital of a past affair with an aging jeweler and it finally leads to a temporary split-up. Together again, but now more antagonists than sweetness-and-light hearts, they face an inevitable problem Nixe is pregnant. Rex abandons his writing ambitions and prepares to do right by her but Nixe says Nix. . . Jawohl, nix.
