The author's reputation for authenticity in things pertaining to the Indians, gives a note of authority to this novel based on the factual background of the Yamassee War of 1715, and of the ablest Indian north of Mexico, who attempted to units his people against the whites. The central figure is a trader-woodsman who has heard rumors of the plot, and who narrowly escapes through his wits, taking with him, to a ""lost island"", near Charleston, the women who love him, and others. Finally, through him, the arch-plotter is captured, and terms agreed upon. A little known story, which had a definite importance in Southern history. A colorful tale.
