WHAT MUSIC IS

Herbert Weinstock's conception of explaining what music is is to tell what music has been about. Here he has adapted and simplified the contents of his earlier book, Music as an Art (1953) to offer a readable history of Western music which moves from the Gregorian Chant through the centuries to late Berg. He is primarily interested in the fine art itself and places it in accordance with its own development rather than within the life of the times. He also provides a chapter of instruction on reading music for those who are unacquainted with its language. A sound and thorough job.
