A zestful tale captures the spirit of the early Virginia settlers who risked their lives to hold on to a piece of wilderness. After the necessary house raisings and plantings, the older men, Silas and Ez decide to explore the territory further and disappear for several months. Young Jonse is left to keep Silas' wife company and deal with the jibes of antagonistic neighbors. A rescue party fails in its search for Silas and Ez, but Jonse and Bess have faith the men will return. As they wait, they are forced to face their most dreaded fear when Indians attack, carry Bess off, but fortunately do not spy Jonse hot on their trail. At an opportune moment, Jonse frees Bess and both are saved in the nick of time by a rescue party including Silas and Ez. Grim descriptions of Indian cruelty and the general sense of insecurity about the fate of Silas and Ez make this a vivid suspenseful tale for boys.
