Some history, lots about care and breeding and an important warning in this all-'round handbook for background knowledge about the latest addition to the home menagerie. Did you know that all the hamsters in captivity in Europe and America are offspring of one litter collected in Syria in 1930? This awesome talent for reproduction in captivity, plus their cleanliness and interesting habits have made the little rodents a popular pet. The author devotes the bulk of the book to the very simple methods of care and feeding with a prod to amateur naturalists to observe and learn. There is also a healthy admonition to avoid releasing hamsters to start wild colonies which would soon spread and be an agricultural menace. The informative and appealing sketches in black and white by Herschel Wartik make this a most attractive book, sure to please at the peak of the hamster craze.
