A reissue of an unusual book first published in Germany before World War I this is beautifully done, and illustrates Hesse (author of Steppenwolf) at his best. It is in the handling rather than the story that the distinction lies. An introspective tracing of the struggles of a young German, Sinclair, through adolescence, to find and accept a philosophy of life which would include both good and evil. His friend of boyhood, Demian, startles and then guides him in this search, with his deep-probing and original interpretations of parts of the Bible, life in general, and aids him to achieve the mystical power of will which are characteristic both of Demian and his remarkable mother. The sort of book that weaves a spell -- for the highly literate reader.
