O HENRY MEMORIAL AWARD PRIZE STORIES OF 1941

This comes nearer the high quality of the O'Brien job of earlier years than anything that has been done recently. Five of the stories stem from the current world situation; the balance are more or less usual assortment of sketches, character studies, youth versus age, regional and sectional aspects, historical and nature episodes, with little plot for plots sake. Some of the stories have been expanded into books (Snow Goo, My Friend Flicha, etc.) Kay Poyle wins first place with Defeat, a story of the German occupation of France; the winners of second and third place are non-war in subject matter. Familiar names, and some newcomers, drawn from the slicks, the quality group, and some of the literary journals. A good job; dependable market.
