In his only picture book, an eminent black artist (1911-88) displays a notably original style. Swirling his earth-toned watercolors to represent the farm where a boy is visiting his grandparents, he creates unusual designs and memorable passages (a richly hued cow, an elegantly sketched frog). The patterned story--Mike finds a fledgling cardinal, discovers that she grows into an unsuitable house pet, and lets her fly free--is unexceptional, but serves as an adequate vehicle for the outstanding illustrations.
