Set in the post-war Germany and Austria of today, this is quite a charming romance written by a skillful author of stories for this age group (see The Golden Door, 1949, incoln's Little Correspondent. 1951). It revolves around Kitty Matthews, the daughter of a German girl and an American flyer. As her mother is dead, Kitty has been living with her hidebound grandmother in Munich, completely out of touch with her father who has been able to get news of her through her mother's friends in the small mountain town of Tegernsee. One of them is Betty, an American girl brought up in Germany and a bookstore proprietor in the town. Though Betty knows Major Matthews only by letter, the correspondence has been long and revealing, and Betty and Kitty finally meet on a visit. As it happens, Major Matthews is stopping on maneuvers in Austria at the same time and Betty's and Kitty's efforts to reach him provide rising suspense as well as the happiest of outcomes. Funny, unsentimental, a real treat.
