Five stories of originality, freshness and humor which give even seven and eight year olds something to think about. In whimsical -- and sometimes incredible situations, the characters of the stories (humans or animals) go about their business with an air of straight-faced reality that is very engaging. The characterizations are rounded and imaginative; the author has not tried to write down to her audience but assumes their interest in people and understanding of human foibles. Slightly older children- up to eleven and twelve, will get more out of the underlying concern with commodities that cannot be bought with gold, and feel very grown-up in understanding the humor and irony of the tales. And younger readers- at the age level indicated -- will enjoy the stories for themselves. Good material for story telling hour.
