THINKING IT OVER

By

Publisher: Harper

Very English, very charming, chatty, sagacious, witty reminiscences of a well-known biographer. From childhood on his primary interest lay in people. He was considered incompetent and inattentive in school, and later in commerce. He spent his spare time at the theatre, and after a brief trip to Mexico, he went into the theatre as an actor manager. The anecdotes of the stage are delightful, with all sorts of people known (Shaw, Barrie, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, etc.), and in the literary field with Frank Harris, Chesterton, Galsworthy, Strachey, and others. Years of the war -- Persia and Mesopotamia -- America. Then a discussion of his literary works. Good reading, for its abundant anecdotal quality, its acute pen portraits, its English with by polish and understatement. A refreshing book, for the urbane literary audience.
