TIME OF TRIAL

The author of Castors Away! has written a second book, set in early nineteenth century England. Margaret Pargeter, age 17, daughter of a book seller, had a fairly easy life until tragedy struck near home. A rotten tenement house collapsed in flames, killing many of the occupants. Margaret's father felt strongly about the slums and assumed the duty of writing a pamphlet about the unnecessary deaths. Margaret is in love with Robert Kerridge, a medical student; she is distraught when her father is arrested, and does not understand why her brother leaves home at an urgent time. The novel is old fashioned in pace, construction and mood. Girls will sympathize with Margaret and learn some English social history in the process.
