Not as original nor as pleasantly ribald as Beer for the Kitten, but a wide-awake and astringent romance with moments of caustic observation and amusement. Nicholas, a New York editor, has a faculty for becoming involved with single-minded women. There is his wife, Susan, social interior decorator, living her job to the exclusion of Nicholas. There is Elaine, one of his protegees, placid, comfortable, something of a slattern. This doesn't work, and after much embarras de bichesse on the part of Susan, he rids himself of both and turns to Angela, who strikes a happy medium. An adept and taking book, two thirds through; the last part peters out to a protracted and artificial finish. Rentals largely.
