TRUMPER

Trumper (who nickers throughout, softly, happily, impatiently, etc.) is a former carriage and saddle horse who doesn't take to life on the farm. But young ark rides him and then trains him to accept a work harness, eventually a beautiful one he buys for $83.00. Mark and Trumper win in a 4-H competition, a first time and a second time, and Mark's bull also wins a first so that he can be sold to save the farm. His rewards-- a calf and a heifer to start his own champion stock. The reader's? a fairly commonplace but healthy story slowed to the life and simpler rtues it records.
