KIRKUS REVIEW

Though Ethan hates school he's curious about a number of things, and he learns a lot from both Frank the zookeeper who tells him why elephants have trunks and zebras stripes, and from Sadie the orangutan who's a whiz at tic-tac-toe. After being beaten repeatedly by Sadie, Ethan works on his game until he is able to win some of the time, and he has a chance to show off his knowledge when the whole class goes to the zoo and stuck-up Betty (""I can beat a dumb ape"") gets her licks. Colman comes out about even here, the 0 being the obvious didacticism of the story and the X the novelty of the teacher. (We'll take it on faith that the better chimp schools have now opened their enrollment to orangutans, but we wonder if Sadie and Ethan know that neither would win at tic-tac-toe if both were on their toes?)
