KERSTI AND ST. NICHOLAS

This is disappointing, as a story, though the Holland background and the eight full pages in color and the other pictures in black and white will make it one of the most distinguished looking books of the season. As for the story itself, I found it less spontaneous, more deliberately manufactured than her earlier books, and I should think that parents would hesitate a bit before giving their children a story of a mischievous little girl who adroitly manoeuvred St. Nicholas into a position where the bad children were rewarded and the good children overlooked. Vocabulary seems gauged above interest level -- another factor to consider in selling this book. So watch out.
