This is a heartwarming story of a Dutch family during the Nazi occupation who managed not only to survive but to extend to a helping hand to many others. There is one hero in the story, the ""winged watchman"", a windmill on the Verhagen farm. It is here that an is safely hidden, and it is the action of the windmill that the crops of several farms. During these terrifying years, many acts of bravery were performed by loyal Dutchmen. With a landwatcher (a traitor who enforced the laws of the Nazia) living next door, the Verhagens have to exercise extra care. Nevertheless, mother rescues a Jewish baby whom she as her own, takes in two refugee Dutch girls her spirit high. Young Dir Jan is sent on a mission by his Uncle Cor, an underground worker, and even six year old Joris a part. Each chapter introduces readers to another aspect of life during these troubled times and reveals, with a ring of reality, the generousity and courage these people displayed. The everyday occurrences seen through the eyes of Dirk Jan will captivate educate American boys and girls.
