The author is illustrating this book herself and we presume that it will be as lovely as all her others. We have listed it in this section because it will give the adult reader such pleasure, though it would be possible for an advanced youngster to read it alone and girls of ten would also love it. Andries is suddenly orphaned in Holland, in the early days of motoring and is taken in by a gruff old bachelor uncle who lives in a dreary big house. The boy of ten yearns for affection but receives none until a kind mother of four in a neighboring little house gives him the warmth he needs. He is constantly doing wrong accidently, and suffering for it even at school, but understanding straightens him out. When his alert mind tackles a tree house, the study of bulbs and teaching tricks to his animal pets, he is happier. The family next door is full of life and kindness, the philosophy of three-year old Kobus on God is particularly endearing. The uncle softens and marries his new housekeeper, he matures as well as Andries. A true to life quality with action and humor makes this an unusually appealing book.
