A certain char and Welsh rural flavor for a story which, although not patterned, has an old fashioned feel to it; but there are readers still looking for this type of book. Mark, a painter, falls in love at sight with Flora, daughter of a Welsh village squire, and returns from the first war to find her married to her cousin, a physical and mental wreck. Flora and Mark become lovers, but part since Flora is unable to maintain a dual relationship. Mark then -- reluctantly -- becomes entangled with the Vicar's daughter, Connie who tries in every way to make him marry her. But, with a summons from Flora -- whose child dies, he returns to her -- and her husband discovers their past relationship and in a fight, Mark kills him. Years later, after Mark is released from jail, they meet again -- all passion spent.
